Do I Need an SEO Agency, or Can I Just Use ChatGPT to Do My Marketing?

Andrew HershJune 30, 20268 min read

It is a completely fair question, and more business owners are asking it every month. ChatGPT will write you a blog post in ten seconds. It will spit out meta descriptions, brainstorm a hundred headlines, draft your Google Business posts, and never send an invoice. So why would you pay an agency a few hundred dollars a month to do marketing when the smartest tool in the world is sitting in your browser for twenty bucks?

I run a small agency, so you would expect me to say "you need me." Instead I am going to give you the honest version, because the honest version is more useful and it is also better for my business in the long run.

(Context: we are Pennsylvania Digital Studio, based in Greenville. We build websites and run local SEO for small businesses across Mercer, Lawrence, Butler, Crawford, and Erie counties. We use AI tools every single day. This is written in June 2026.)

What can ChatGPT actually do for your marketing?

More than people expect, and that is the part agencies do not love to admit. ChatGPT is genuinely good at the blank-page problems. It will draft copy, rewrite a clunky paragraph, suggest blog topics, outline a page, turn your bullet points into something readable, and brainstorm angles you would not have thought of at nine at night after a full day on the job. If your bottleneck is "I do not have time to write anything and I do not know where to start," AI is a real, cheap fix for exactly that.

It is also a fine research assistant and a decent coach. You can paste in a competitor's page and ask what they are doing well. You can ask it to explain why your rankings dropped. You can have it draft a month of social posts in one sitting. For a business owner who is willing to learn and put in the hours, AI removes a lot of the grunt work that used to require hiring someone.

So no, you are not wrong to wonder. For some businesses, AI plus a few hours a week is genuinely enough to get started.

Where does using ChatGPT for marketing quietly fall apart?

Here is the part the "fire your agency, AI does it all now" crowd skips over. AI is brilliant at producing words and useless at three things that actually decide whether marketing works: knowing your market, doing the unglamorous technical work, and being accountable for the result.

First, it does not know Greenville from Grove City. Ask ChatGPT to write a page about your plumbing service in Mercer County and it will produce something fluent, confident, and totally generic, the same paragraph it would write for a plumber in Ohio or Arizona. It does not know which towns actually send you calls, which competitor is beating you in the map pack, or what local detail would make a customer trust you. That generic, could-be-anywhere content is exactly what Google now penalizes and exactly what AI assistants decline to recommend. The tool that is supposed to save you can quietly bury you.

Second, it does not do the technical work. Real SEO is schema markup, site speed, a properly configured Google Business Profile, consistent listings across a dozen directories, internal linking, fixing the broken thing you did not know was broken. ChatGPT can describe all of that. It cannot log into your site and do it, and it will not notice that your contact form has been silently failing for three weeks. Knowing what should happen and making it happen are very different jobs.

Third, and this is the big one, AI is not accountable. It does not care whether your phone rings. It will cheerfully generate a year of content that produces nothing and never once tell you "this is not working, we need to change course." There is no one watching the results, catching the problem, and owning the outcome. That is not a small gap. That is the entire point of hiring someone.

So do you need an agency, or not?

Here is the clean way to decide, and it has nothing to do with whether AI is "good enough."

If you have time, you enjoy learning this stuff, and your market is not very competitive, you can absolutely DIY it with AI as your assistant. Claim your Google Business Profile, use ChatGPT to help you write honest, specific, local content, ask for reviews, and stay consistent. Plenty of small businesses get real results this way, and I would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need.

If you do not have the time, or you are in a competitive market where everyone is already fighting for the same calls, or you have tried the DIY thing and the phone still is not ringing, that is when an agency earns its fee. Not because we can write better than ChatGPT (the gap there is smaller every month), but because we know your specific market, we do the technical work AI cannot touch, and we are on the hook for whether it actually produces customers.

The real answer is that it is not AI versus an agency. The good agencies, including ours, are using the same AI tools you have, just pointed at a market we actually know and bolted onto the technical and accountability work the tool cannot do. You are not paying for words anymore. You are paying for judgment, local knowledge, and someone whose paycheck depends on your results.

What is the smartest move for a small business right now?

Start with the free experiment. Use ChatGPT for a couple of months. Write some content, claim your profile, see how far you get. You will learn a lot about your own market, and some of you will find that it is genuinely enough, which is a great outcome.

But watch the clock and watch the phone. If you are spending hours you do not have, or you are producing content and the calls are not coming, that is the signal that you have hit the ceiling of what the tool alone can do. There is a real difference between a business that needs a writing assistant and a business that needs a marketing partner, and most owners know in their gut which one they are.
